Diseases of the heart (cardiovascular diseases) are any number of disorders that affect the heart and/or blood vessels such as heart attack and failure. Presently, this is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. According to the World Health Organization an estimated 17.3 million people died from cardiovascular diseases in 2008 and it is calculated that this will increase to 23.6 million by 2030. In 2011, the American Heart Association estimated that between the years 2010-2030 the costs for treating cardiovascular diseases will increase from $273 to $818 billion dollars.
With medical costs for cardiovascular disease increasing annually, cell based therapies are the target for possible standards of care. Greater than 3000 patients have been treated with stem cells for cardiovascular diseases in various clinical trials worldwide; all demonstrating that the procedure is safe. With thousands of scientific publications available in the field of cardiovascular disease and stem cells, DaVinci Biosciences is also investigating the use of stem cells to treat patients suffering from this devastating disease. In 2010, DaVinci Biosciences published a study demonstrating that stem cells isolated from umbilical cord lining can be differentiated into cardiac cell types. This is a promising step toward the development of effective alternative methods of treating and regenerating cells that are compromised in cardiovascular diseases.
